The School

The Daniel Corkery Summer School is held in the third week of July each year, at Creedon's Hotel, Inchigeelagh, County Cork. It runs from Sunday evening to Friday evening of that week, opening with a "keynote lecture" on the year's chosen theme. Themes in past years have included "Penal Times in Ireland", "Máire Bhúi Ó Laoghaire" and, of course "Daniel Corkery" himself.

Each morning, Mon-Fri, a watercolour workshop/course is held. This is guided by a professional artist, often James Donovan O'Connel from Kinsale. If the weather is suitable, outside subjects are normally chosen, if not many subjects can be found within the hotel itself.

Afternoons are devoted to a text/translation workshop, during which an old Irish text or poem is analysed with guidance from Douglas Gill / Ursula Williams / Miriam O'Donovan. The resulting poem/text is usually rendered during one of the evening sessions.

Early evenings are devoted to a Choral Workshop, which is held in St.Finbarr's Church. A choir of visitors and locals practise an especially written/arranged mass under a choirmaster who is frequently the composer. Recent composers have included Séan O'Riada, son of the famous local composer Paeder O'Riada and himself of no little reputation, and Tom Shorter a young choirister from London who gave us a fine performance in 2005 & 2006. The mass is publicly performed on the Friday evening.

Evening sessions, usually start about 9:00pm, and include subjects such as the following.

  • A poetry reading by the writer. Guests have included Louis de Paor, Conal Creedon, Tómas Ó Canainn and Patrick Galvin.
  • A concert. Recent performers have been Cor Cuil Aodha, conductor Séan O'Riada, with O'Riada's setting of "Caoine Art Ó Laoghaire & and The Trio Divertimento from Denmark.
  • A political lecture on a subject from Irish history. Father Brian Murphy has lectured about Erskine Childers and Meada Ryan about Michael Collins. This is usually followed by a lively discussion.

There is no charge for attendance at most of the classes, apart from the week's major concert. Donations are of course accepted. The school has, as yet, managed to survive in this way
